A new garage door is one of the better investments you can make on a Detroit home. We install single and double car doors starting around $1,200 for steel up to $4,500 for premium insulated doors with a smart opener. Most jobs take 3-5 hours. We pull the old door, haul everything away, set up the new door and springs, install and program the opener, and make sure it all works before we leave. We've done enough Detroit installs to know which brands hold up in our winters.

Door sizes for Detroit homes
Most Detroit homes take a standard 8x7 or 16x7. If you're in Corktown, Indian Village, or Boston-Edison with an older build, we measure first because those openings aren't always standard. Custom sizes aren't a problem, they just take a bit more lead time.
Single car doors
- 8x7 - Standard single car, most common Detroit size
- 9x7 - Wider clearance for SUVs and trucks
- 10x7 - Oversized single for full-size trucks
- 8x8 or 9x8 - Taller openings for lifted vehicles
Double car doors
- 16x7 - Standard two-car garage door, most popular
- 18x7 - Wide two-car opening for larger garages
- 16x8 or 18x8 - Taller two-car for RVs and boats
- Custom sizes - Historic Detroit homes with non-standard openings
Door materials
Steel is the right call for most Detroit homeowners. Wood is beautiful if you're willing to maintain it. Here's how each option actually holds up in this climate.
Steel doors
Most popularThe bread and butter. Affordable, low maintenance, and they handle Michigan road salt well with a powder-coated finish. Available in 24-26 gauge standard or heavier 14-18 gauge. Won't warp or crack in the freeze-thaw cycles we get here. 15-20 year lifespan.
$1,200-$2,800 installed
Wood doors
Classic lookCedar, redwood, or hemlock. Nothing looks better on a Corktown or Indian Village home. We offer custom carriage house styles. The trade-off is maintenance: seal or stain every 2-3 years. 15-20 year lifespan if maintained.
$3,500-$6,000 installed
Composite doors
Low maintenanceSteel frame with a composite overlay that mimics wood grain. The look of wood without the upkeep. Won't warp, crack, or attract insects. Good if you want wood aesthetics but don't want to babysit the door every spring. 20-25 year lifespan.
$2,500-$4,000 installed
Aluminum doors
Modern styleLightweight and corrosion-resistant, a natural fit for Michigan's wet seasons. Lower R-value than steel, so best on detached garages or homes going for a modern look. Popular in newer builds. 20-30 year lifespan.
$1,800-$3,500 installed
Insulation for Michigan winters
Detroit temps swing from below zero to 90 degrees in the same year. If your garage is attached to the house, insulation matters. Our deep dive on R-values for Michigan homes has more detail, but here's the short version.
What we recommend for Detroit
Minimum R-12 for attached garages. R-16 Intellicore if you want top performance. Unheated detached garages can get away with R-8, though R-12 is worth the small price jump. See the insulation upgrade page if you want to improve an existing door without full replacement.
R-8 insulation
Entry-level. Fine for unheated detached garages. Not what we'd put on an attached garage in Detroit where you're fighting real cold.
Energy savings: minimal in Detroit climate
R-12 insulation
What most Detroit attached garages should have. Polystyrene or polyurethane between steel panels. Keeps the cold from bleeding into the house and the door from contracting badly in January.
Energy savings: $50-100/year vs. non-insulated
R-16 Intellicore
Polyurethane injected into a steel sandwich, which is as solid as it sounds. Maximum energy performance and noticeably quieter. Best for attached garages where you're also using the space as a workshop or mudroom.
Energy savings: $100-200/year vs. non-insulated

How installation works
We've done a lot of these. The process is straightforward, and we do it all in one trip so you're not waiting on callbacks or multiple visits. New springs and opener are installed as part of the job, not as add-ons you have to chase.
Measurement and estimate
We measure the opening, check headroom and side room clearances, and walk you through material and insulation options with real pricing. No pressure, no inflated quotes.
Old door removal
We safely disassemble the existing door, panels, springs, tracks, and all hardware. Everything goes on the truck. You won't be left sorting through old parts in the driveway.
Track and hardware installation
New tracks go in level and plumb. Brackets, hinges, and rollers mounted to spec. This is where a lot of DIY installs go sideways, alignment matters for how the door moves and how long the hardware lasts.
Panel assembly
Panels go up section by section, hinges and rollers connected as we go. We check alignment before moving to springs because fixing a crooked install after the springs are wound is not a fun job.
Spring installation and balancing
Torsion springs matched to the door weight and height. A mismatch here stresses the opener motor and shortens everything's lifespan. We set tension so the door holds mid-travel when disconnected from the opener.
Opener installation and programming
We mount the opener, connect it to the door, align the safety sensors, and program both remotes and the keypad. LiftMaster and Chamberlain are what we typically install. We test every safety feature before we're done.
Typical job time: 3-5 hours
That covers old door removal, new door and opener installation, spring balancing, safety testing, and a walkthrough with you at the end. Need it done today? Emergency same-day installation is available. After that, an annual tune-up keeps everything running for years.
