Why a Tired Spring Picks the First Hard Freeze

Your torsion springs, the wound coils on the bar above the door, do the lifting. The opener only guides the door. Springs wear all year. Cold just finds the one that's already worn out. Steel gets stiffer and more brittle as it chills, so a spring with a hidden flaw is most likely to give out on that first frozen morning lift, when everything in the garage is at its stiffest.

A tired spring gives no warning. It looks the same today as it did last year, then it fails at one small flaw and simply snaps. Springs are rated in cycles, not years, and every open and close counts. That's why we'd rather change a worn spring on a quiet fall morning than race a broken one in January.

    The temperature drops hard overnight, and the steel in your springs contracts and stiffens with everything else in the garage.

  2. More load per cycle.

    Thick cold grease, stiff rollers and a bottom seal frozen to the floor all fight that first lift of the morning.
