Emergency Mechanical Failure Repair in Detroit

Mechanical failures are the number one reason a garage door stops working. A spring snaps, a cable frays through, an opener motor seizes, a drive gear strips out. The door becomes a 200-pound piece of dead weight that won't move, or worse, drops without warning. We fix all of these the same day with parts already on our trucks.

Each service truck rolls with torsion springs in the most common sizes, extension springs, cables, rollers, hinges, and the parts to rebuild any LiftMaster, Genie, or Chamberlain opener built in the last 15 years. Most calls are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

What counts as a mechanical failure

If you're not sure whether your problem is mechanical, call us. Two minutes on the phone usually answers it.

Broken torsion or extension spring

You hear a loud bang from the garage. The door now feels impossibly heavy, the opener strains and gives up. The spring overhead has snapped. This is dangerous to attempt yourself. We carry torsion springs in standard wire and length sizes for residential doors.

Typical fix time: 60 to 90 minutes.

Snapped or frayed cable

The door drops on one side, jams in the track, or hangs at an angle. Cables fray gradually then fail suddenly. If you see fraying, stop using the door. We replace cables in pairs because if one is at end of life, the other is too.

Typical fix time: 45 to 75 minutes.

Seized opener motor

You press the button. You hear a click or a hum, but no movement. Capacitor failure, burned-out winding, or thermal shutdown after years of overloading. Sometimes it's a $40 capacitor swap. Sometimes the unit is past saving. We tell you which it is before any work starts.

Typical fix time: 30 to 90 minutes.

Stripped drive gear

The motor runs but the door won't move. Plastic drive gear inside the opener has stripped. Common in chain-drive units more than 8 to 10 years old. We carry gear kits for the major brands and can have it rebuilt within an hour.

Typical fix time: 45 to 60 minutes.

Off-track from roller failure

A roller fails, the door comes off the rail. Now it's under uneven tension. Do not try to force it back on. Cables can snap and panels can drop. We put it back on track, replace the failed rollers, and inspect every other one before we leave.

Typical fix time: 60 to 120 minutes.

Hinge or bracket failure

A hinge between panels rusts through or shears off. The door binds, makes loud cracks, or refuses to close flat. Cheap to fix if caught early. We carry the standard 14-gauge hinges and stem rollers.

Typical fix time: 30 to 60 minutes.

Can I open the door manually if the spring broke?

Short answer: usually no, and definitely not alone. A residential garage door weighs 150 to 250 pounds. The spring is what makes it feel light. With the spring broken, you are lifting the full weight against gravity, and the cables on the sides are trying to do work they were never rated for.

If you absolutely must get a car out of the garage:

  • Pull the red emergency release cord on the opener carriage. This disconnects the door from the motor.
  • Get a second person. Two adults lifting one residential door is the minimum.
  • Lift evenly from both sides at the bottom. Watch for cables. Watch for fingers near hinges.
  • Once up, prop it open with a 2x4 or a stiff broom handle. Do not assume it will stay up on its own.

Better answer: call us. We can have someone there in under an hour, and your back will thank you.
